Task list for contacting schools

STEP ONE: Contact Info

Step one involves finding out the name, phone number and mailing address of your principal and superintendent. You can access that info at the following website, searching by school name or county name: http://profiles.doe.mass.edu/

STEP TWO: The Letter

Cut and paste the draft letter available on AFSC's website into a word processor, add the principal's info and print it out, and then add the superintendent's and print a second copy. Sign the letters with your name and phone number.

STEP THREE: Supporting Material

Next, Include some supporting literature. One of our brochures is at: http://users.crocker.com/~afsc/flyers/COUNTERR.PDF. This files are double-sided. Print one page out, then reinsert the paper to print the other side. The brochure is meant to be folded in thirds.

STEP FOUR: Stuff the envelop and mail

Neatly fold the letter in thirds, include the brochure and bookmark, place all in an envelop and mail! One 37 cent stamp should do it.

STEP FIVE: Follow-up!!!!

Very important that you CALL within a week of sending the letter. The superintendent might be easier to reach since she/he is more likely to be at their desk during the day. When you call, refer to the letter. If they haven't seen it, don't hang up. Go over what was in it and ask for either a time in May to table during lunch or (at least, but we want BOTH) sending the guidance counselor/career center a package of brochures and bookmarks for display in the school. Be friendly, but firm. If you get flak (but don't assume you will), ask if the school has military recruitment materials available in the school. If the answer is yes, remind the superintendent/principal about the equal access law, which is in the letter. Simply stated, the school is required by law to allow the same access. Meaning, if the military has brochures, than brochures of alternatives to military service must also be available. If the military gets to table during lunch, than a CR group must also be allowed to table during lunch...etc. If you have questions, call Jo at AFSC (584.8975)
